Flu vaccine 2023/24
Groups eligible for influenza vaccinations are based on the advice of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). The programme aims to provide direct protection to those who are at higher risk of influenza associated morbidity and mortality and to reduce transmission to all age groups through the vaccination of children.
You will usually be administered the vaccine recommended by the JCVI. Please follow this link to see the approved vaccines for this year.
- Those aged 65 years and over.
- Those aged 6 months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups, such as the below groups:
- respiratory conditions, such as asthma (needing a steroid inhaler or tablets), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema and bronchitis.
- diabetes
- heart conditions, such as coronary heart disease or heart failure
- being very overweight – a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above
- chronic kidney disease
- liver disease, such as hepatitis
- some neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), or cerebral palsy
- a learning disability
- problems with your spleen like sickle cell disease, or if you’ve had your spleen removed
- a weakened immune system as a result of conditions such as HIV and AIDS, or taking medicines such as steroid tablets or chemotherapy
- Pregnant women.
- All children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August 2023.
- All primary school-aged children and all secondary school-aged children up to Year 11 (though this will usually be arranged by the child’s school).
- Those in long stay residential care homes.
- Carers in receipt of carer’s allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person.
- Close contacts of immunocompromised individuals.

Please be aware that our phone lines experience high call volumes from 8:30 AM to 12:00 AM, Monday through Friday. If you are attempting to book a flu vaccination appointment via telephone, we kindly request that you call us between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Covid-19 Booster vaccine 2023/24
Due to concerns about a new variant, the upcoming vaccination campaign will now begin on September 11th, 2023. We have been instructed to give priority to those individuals who are at the highest risk. Eligible groups include:
- Residents in older care homes
- All individuals aged 65 and over.
- Those with underlying health conditions who are eligible for a flu vaccine.
- Health and care staff
Booster COVID-19 vaccines are administered through a central process and are not provided at the Vale Practice. You will be sent a text message inviting you to schedule your booster vaccine. Kindly await this text message notification.
Protecting Your Child Against Flu
- children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August 2022 (born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2021)
- children aged 2 to 17 years with long-term health conditions
Flu Vaccine Appointments
When attending an appointment for the flu vaccine, please ensure the following:
We kindly request that you arrive as close to your appointment time as possible to minimize queues.
Unless you require a carer's assistance, we ask that you attend your appointment alone.
Please wear suitable clothing that allows easy access for your injection.
